Okay so I have eight hair toppers in a drawer. I shaved my head in July 2026, so none of them are on my head at the minute, and that is oddly the reason I can finally write this one honestly.
There’s no piece I’m currently attached to. Nothing I’m quietly defending because I spent a fortune on it last month. Just eight things I bought or was sent over about five years, and what I actually think of each one now that none of them owe me anything.
Every one of these went on my head. Same scalp underneath, same fine hair, same androgenic alopecia sitting mostly at the parting, every time. So when I say what a 5.5×5.5 covers and what a 9×9 covers, that’s six base sizes on one woman’s head and I can tell you what each of them did on it.

The Courtney, the Melanie and the Jon Renau never got a star rating when I first wrote them up. Those three are me scoring them now, looking back, which I can only really do because I’m not wearing any of them at the moment. The other five are the ratings I gave at the time and they still stand.
What base size actually means
Base size is the measurement of the bit that sits on your head, in inches, and its the number that decides whether the topper covers what you need covering. I’d sort that before I looked at anything else on the listing.
My smallest is 5.5×5.5 and my biggest is 9×9. Written down that gap looks like nothing. On a head it is enormous. The Claire sits on the crown and does the parting and stops. The Melanie and the Jon Renau cover most of the top of my head and start to feel closer to a wig than a topper.
The trap: two brands quoting one number are not always quoting the same thing
My Moonlight is the piece that taught me this one.
Its cap is 8×8. The hand-tied silk section inside that cap is 4×4. Those two numbers do completely different jobs. The 8×8 is the footprint that has to cover your thinning area. The 4×4 is the bit that reads as scalp and the only area you can actually move your parting within.
Two 8x8s from two different brands can be doing completely different jobs. Check what’s underneath the number before you decide they’re the same piece.
Same goes for density percentages. My Lusta and my Highline are around the same stated density and they look nothing alike on my head. Don’t buy on that figure alone. And before you buy anything at all, measure your hair loss area. Two minutes with a tape measure. Buying on price without measuring is the first mistake I made and it’s the most expensive one, which is why it opens my whole list of topper mistakes.

Uniwigs Claire, 5.5×5.5 mono top with a lace front
Uniwigs sent me this one. It’s the smallest piece I own and it was the first thing I ever filmed for YouTube, in a July heatwave, in a room I was melting in. I recorded it four times because I kept drifting out of frame.
The lace front is the underrated bit. It lets you wear the piece properly far forward without a hard line sitting across your forehead, which is also the trick I used to hide a colour mismatch, because the G-2 matched my ends better than my roots.
Mono top means the knots show if someone gets close enough to study your parting. Nobody has ever done that to me. I later widened and shaded the parting myself with an electric eyebrow razor, and there’s a part two after two months of wear as well.
Small cap, so I could throw my hair up in it, and it’s a good first topper because it doesn’t ask you to know what you’re doing before it’ll look right. Full Claire review here. My 5.5×5.5 is on clearance now, US only and nothing going back, so the 6×6 they sell instead is the one worth looking at.
Lusta, 7×7 silk top
My own money, no code, no affiliate link. This was my first topper bought online and it’s still one of my two favourites.
Trust Fund Baby, 20 inches, Brazilian hair, silk top. I gambled on the colour off the website and got lucky, and the reason it worked is a tip a woman in a Facebook group gave me: if you don’t know your shade, buy one with several tones running through it, because your own hair will catch one of them and the rest reads as natural variation.
Six clips, three each side, with a silicone strip inside them so they don’t drag. That’s the detail I shop on now and hardly any brand puts it in the headline specs. Of everything I own this is the piece that lies flattest on my head.
At ten months it had been washed, curled, straightened, hairsprayed, left on the couch, strewn over a pillow and generally knocked about, and it still looked like the day it arrived. No bald patches in the base, no real shedding.
It’s the densest piece I own. I had it thinned and layered at the front and it could still stand to lose more, so it hangs forward over my face. It also ships from Australia, which cost me another £60 to £70 in customs. I wrote the Lusta up properly here.
Highline Light Lexie Dark Root, 7×8 silk top
Also my own money. I circled the Highline site for months before I bought it, opening the tab and closing the tab and opening it again.
The silk top reads as scalp in a way I wasn’t ready for, and the dark root took most of the stress out of blending. Light Lexie is honestly too light for me, my hair sits between a 2 and a 3, but the dark root carries it and my own darker hair underneath reads as deliberate rather than as a mistake.
Five clips with the silicone strips. As comfortable as the Lusta ones and noticeably kinder than my Uniwigs clips. It’s much less dense than the Lusta, so this is the one I can put up in a ponytail without a fight.
The one thing I’d flag is that it doesn’t sit completely flat. There’s a small bump at the back. I have an oddly shaped head so some of that is me. And getting hold of one is basically buying gig tickets. Turn Instagram notifications on, because pieces go up on stories before they hit the website, and be logged into PayPal already. Uniwigs Courtney, 7×8 mono part with a wefted back
Gifted by Uniwigs, and the one I’d hand to somebody who cannot spend four figures, because plenty of pieces at the top end do run towards a thousand pounds.
Uniwigs have redesigned the Courtney since mine and stopped selling the original, so that link goes to the Upgrade version, which has a bigger mono area and a parting that moves. What I say below is about the one I had.
The price makes sense once you look at the cap. It does have a mono top, so you get the realistic scalp at the parting, but the hand-tied section is only the parting strip itself and everything else is wefted. The parting is middle only and you can’t move it. That flexibility is a big chunk of what you pay extra for on something like the Claire.
Which mattered less to me than I expected, since I’m mostly a middle part person anyway. You can clip it slightly off centre and fake a soft side part. One warning that comes with that: if you tilt it, the clips land somewhere they weren’t designed to land, and if that patch is where your loss is worst you’d be gripping your weakest hair every single day, so I wouldn’t.
The parting looked genuinely natural straight out of the packet with no plucking needed, which I can’t say about everything I own. It’s low density and light, it goes up easily, and having been very keen on the Claire I was surprised to find I preferred this one. Wildflower Hazel, 8×8 silk top
Bought with my own money. I got mine through Silk or Lace, back when Wildflower stock was listed there, but you go straight to Jess on the Wildflower site now. This is the one I loved on sight and the piece I’d put at the top of the whole list, and I said much the same in the review at the time.
Silk top, 21 inches, European hair, medium density, a warm dark brunette between a 3 and a 4. European hair is finer than the Asian hair used in most pieces, so it moves more like the hair you’d expect to be growing out of your own head.
I wore it out for a full day and forgot I had it on. That almost never happens. Most pieces need a bit of ongoing mental monitoring and this one didn’t ask for any. It arrived already layered and it isn’t front-heavy, so it never did the thing the Lusta does over my face.
The clips were stiff and rough for the first few weeks before they softened up. And fine European hair tangles more easily on a collar or a coat shoulder, so keep a comb in every bag, hold the hair above the tangle and work up from underneath instead of dragging a brush down from the top.
Wildflower is Jess, who lost her own hair to PCOS at eighteen and started the brand in 2019. She colours, cuts, photographs and lists every piece herself and answers the emails. You can feel that in the product.
Moonlight Virgo, 8×8 cap with a 4×4 hand-tied silk top
My own money again. Note the brand changed name: Moonlight Hair UK is now Moonlight Hair London, same woman behind it, Mehtap, so if you searched the old name and found nothing that’s why.
Virgin Brazilian Remy, 21 inches, listed as a colour 3 though I’d call it closer to a 2, which put it about as near my own shade as you can hope for on a first order you can’t see in person.
What made this one different was the cut. It arrived pre-cut with layers and a fringe already in it, so there was no salon appointment and no wearing it in an awkward in-between state for three weeks. The fringe is still my favourite thing about it. It also arrived the next day, because it ships from within the UK.
The real reason to buy here is the consultation. Mehtap wears toppers herself and does face-to-face appointments in London as well as video ones. Uniwigs Melanie, 8.5×9 mono top
Uniwigs sent me this one as well. It’s the biggest base I’ve worn by a distance and I filmed the whole review of it here. Against the Courtney’s 7×8 that’s an inch and a half more front to back and a full extra inch across, and it is a genuinely different piece on your head.
The benefit of a big base is where the clips end up. They sit further down my head, away from the parting where my hair is thinnest and most fragile, so there’s less pull and less pain by the end of the day. There are seven clips on this one and I never use all seven, I rotate which ones I use so I’m not putting traction on the same patches every day.
It was sold as straight, arrived straight, and then air dried with a wave in it once I’d washed the silicone coating off, which is what I do with every new piece to see what the hair actually does. I liked the wave, but if you want straight-and-go you may be heat styling it. And the clips felt rough and hard compared to my Highline and Lusta ones, though they soften with use.
On price, this was $879, roughly £642 at the time, before customs. My Moonlight cost about the same in pounds, had no customs at all, came custom cut with a fringe, and the hair feels better to me. Here’s the Melanie if you’re curious.
Jon Renau Top Smart Wavy 18, 9×9 mono top with a lace front
My own money. I got this one from Peluka Salon and they price matched it, so it came in at a good price.
It’s the only synthetic I’ve put on this list. I do own a few others, they just have much smaller bases, and this is the big comfy one. I prefer human hair and that hasn’t changed. But I like keeping a synthetic or two around for the summer.
You don’t have to style it. Wash it, let it air dry, and its ready to throw on your head. Nothing else on this list lets me do that.
Mono top with a lace front, and at 9×9 it’s the biggest base I own, a bit wider than the Melanie. It sits light on my head, which is the other reason it’s my warm weather piece.
The colour is FS4/33/30A, Midnight Cocoa. Dark brown with red and red-blonde running through it.
Synthetics are generally cheaper than human hair as well, though how much cheaper swings a lot depending on the brand and whether you catch a sale.
Three out of five from me, and the score is almost entirely for how easy it is to live with. Human hair is still what I reach for the rest of the year.
The customs bill nobody warns you about
This is the section I’d have wanted five years ago.
If a topper ships to you from outside the UK, the price on the website is not the price you pay. The parcel gets held, the courier emails you a demand for import duty and VAT, and you pay it before they’ll release it.
My Highline came from the US via DHL. The bill was £158.20 on top, and I still have the email. My Lusta came from Australia and carried another £60 to £70. That Highline charge was December 2020 and the rates and thresholds have moved since, so treat it as proof the charge is real and substantial rather than as a quote. Work yours out before you order, not after, and check the current gov.uk guidance.
Set that against my Moonlight and my Wildflower. Both shipped from within the UK. No customs, no waiting, and the Moonlight turned up the next day.
None of this is a criticism of Highline or Lusta and I love both pieces. But when a UK brand and an overseas one are quoting similar numbers, they are not actually the same price, and that’s worth doing the maths on before you click.

Wildflower Hair UK and Moonlight Hair London are the two I’ve spent my own money with, and both pieces are in the list above.
Her Hair My Head is one I’d point you at, with a caveat. I haven’t bought a piece from her, so I’m vouching for the seller. I can’t tell you what her hair does on a head because I’ve never had it on mine.
It’s Georgina Probert, based in Westerham in Kent. I’ve followed her on Instagram for years. She’s had androgenic alopecia for twenty years and has been wearing toppers and wigs herself for about five of them, which is the same reason I trust Jess at Wildflower and Mehtap at Moonlight. All three of them wear this stuff themselves.
Both her consultations are free, and I don’t think enough people realise that. An hour in person in Kent where you can try a pile of pieces on, or half an hour on video if Kent is nowhere near you. It’s appointment only, so check her consultations page for days before you set off. One detail I was pleased to see written down: the consultation room is up a flight of stairs, and she says to tell her beforehand if stairs are difficult and she’ll see you in a downstairs room instead.
Her own range came out of Covid, when the price of human hair went through the roof and she went looking for a supplier who could do high grade Remy without the four figure price tag the big brands carry. That’s the Super Flat toppers and the mini toppers, and the wigs followed in the same hair. She stocks other brands alongside her own, including Jon Renau, Ellen Wille, Raquel Welch, Rene of Paris, Sentoo, Uniwigs and TrendCo, who as it happens made my very first topper, bought in a salon back when I knew nothing at all.
She also runs a preloved marketplace where you can buy and sell. Nearly everyone who wears this stuff ends up with a piece sitting in a box, so that has an obvious use. There’s a virtual try-on where you upload a selfie and see the hair on your own face, returns are 14 days on anything new, and there’s a discount for medical hair loss.
All three of those ship from within the UK, so there is nothing to pay on top.
Not in the UK, but worth knowing about anyway
Silk or Lace is where I got my Wildflower years ago. Wildflower sell direct now and as far as I know they aren’t stocked there any more, so don’t go looking for one. Worth being clear that Silk or Lace are based in Plano, Texas, not here, so anything shipping from them to the UK falls under the customs section above. Factor that in before you fall in love with something.
They’re worth the mention anyway. Their site and Instagram were some of the first things I found when I was trying to work out what a topper even was, well over a year before I bought anything. They carry Highline, Lusta, Follea and a few other brands alongside their own pieces, and they do free consultations by video.
The resale side is the bit I’d actually use, where people sell on the lightly worn piece that didn’t work out for them, which is how a lot of us end up affording the expensive brands at all. Then there’s the hair finder, where you filter by colour, length and construction and set an alert for when something matching gets listed. Popular pieces go in minutes, so set the alert up before you need it.

Buying your first one
Measure first. Then think about density, because a piece denser than your own hair reads as obviously not yours. Mine is fine textured so I want light or medium every time. My Lusta is the reminder there, brilliant piece, still denser than my own hair even after I had it thinned.
Then colour, and don’t pick it off a thumbnail, because a photo on a website will never tell you what a colour does in your own bathroom light. That’s half of what buyer beware when buying that hair is about. Either buy something with several tones running through it, or message the brand and ask them to help you match, or both. My colour matching post exists because I got this wrong more than once. And match to your roots rather than your ends, since roots are usually darker and ends usually carry fade.
If you’re not sure a topper is even the right thing, start with hair topper vs wig, and if you’re right at the very start of all this, what I’d tell myself at the beginning is the wider version. Once you’ve got one, why your topper keeps sliding and the maintenance routine are the two you’ll want next. I killed a topper I loved by getting lazy with that second one.
I wish someone had told me both of these in 2020. Put texturising spray or powder on the patches of your own hair where the clips grip, because it makes those sections feel thicker so the piece stays put and the clips don’t have to bite as hard. And rotate where you put the clips. I used the same spots for years and gave myself a sore scalp and real hair loss underneath. Moving them around fixed it and the hair came back, and I went through all of that properly in do hair toppers damage your hair. What is the best hair topper base size for a thinning crown?
It depends on how much of your crown is thinning, which is why measuring beats guessing. I have worn 5.5×5.5, 7×7, 7×8, 8×8, 8.5×9 and 9×9 on the same head. The 5.5×5.5 covers the crown and the parting and stops. A 7×7 or 7×8 gives you more room front to back and is where most people with moderate crown thinning land. The 8.5×9 and the 9×9 cover most of the top of my head and start to feel closer to a wig than a topper.
What is the best hair topper I have owned?

What is the difference between a silk top and a mono top hair topper?
A mono top has the hair knotted into a fine mesh, so the knots are faintly visible up close but the parting lies very flat. A silk top adds a layer of silk over those knots and hides them completely, which reads more convincingly as scalp at the cost of a little height at the base. I own both. Silk tops look better close up. Mono tops are lighter, lie flatter, and are what I reach for in hot weather because a silk top sits more like a hat.
What density hair topper do I need for fine hair?
Light or medium. My own hair is fine textured and the pieces that have worked best on me are the lower density ones. Be careful comparing density percentages between brands, though. My Lusta and my Highline are around the same stated density and they look nothing alike on my head.

Longer than you would think if you look after it, and a lot less if you don’t. I also ruined one I loved by getting lazy, shoving it in a bag instead of on a stand and skipping the deep conditioning. Stand, storage bag, proper wash routine.
