I’ll cut straight to it: I loved this one. Like, put-it-on-and-immediately-felt-good loved it. And the more I found out about the brand, the more that made sense – because Wildflower isn’t some faceless company churning out pieces. It’s Jess. One person, who lost her own hair to PCOS at eighteen, spent years trying every treatment going, discovered alternative hair and had that complete perspective shift that anyone who’s been through it will recognise immediately. She launched Wildflower in 2019 because of that experience. She colours, cuts, photographs and lists every single piece herself. She’s the one replying to your emails. That’s the whole operation. And you can feel it in the product.

A few things worth highlighting there. European hair is different to the Asian hair used in a lot of alternative hair pieces – finer in texture, which means it behaves more like natural European bio hair and blends more seamlessly if that’s your hair type. The 8×8 base is a good size for moderate to more advanced crown thinning (if you’re not sure what base size you need, here’s how to measure your hair loss area before you order anything). And 21 inches is genuinely long – this is a piece with presence.
The silk top base is the premium end of construction. It goes a step further than mono top by adding a layer of silk that sits over the knots and hides them completely – the hair looks like it genuinely grows out of your scalp. No visible mesh, no visible knots, just a parting that looks real. For someone with Androgenic Alopecia where the parting is the thing that gives the game away, this is exactly what you want.
First Impressions Out of the Box
It arrived in great condition. Properly packaged, not a tangled mess, ready to go. First thing I always check is the base – and the silk top on the Hazel was genuinely beautiful. The knots were completely hidden underneath, and the construction was clean. The clips I’ve got more to say about below, because they were the one thing that wasn’t right straight out of the box.
The hair quality was immediately impressive. Soft with real movement – not that weird stiff softness some pieces have straight out of packaging that vanishes the moment you wash them. And the colour. Jess colours each piece herself and you can tell. The 3-4 shade is a rich, warm dark brunette with depth to it – not flat, not one-note. If you’ve been burned by the screen-to-real-life colour gap before (I have, extensively, there’s a whole post about it), this one actually delivers.
How It Wears
This is where it really won me over. I wore it out for a full day and it was one of those pieces where you stop thinking about your hair completely. The clips held, nothing shifted, nothing crept forward. The silk top parting looked so natural that I kept catching myself in mirrors and doing a double-take – not the anxious double-take of is-it-obvious, the good double-take of oh, that actually looks like my hair.
That feeling – where you genuinely forget you’re wearing something – is rare. I don’t say it lightly. I’ve worn a lot of pieces and most of them require some level of ongoing mental monitoring. This one just sat there being hair. Which is the entire point and not as easy to achieve as it sounds.
The European hair is worth a specific mention here too. It moves differently to pieces made with Asian hair – finer, lighter, more like what you’d expect your own hair to feel. The length (21 inches is a lot of hair) meant I really noticed how well it moved. Nothing stiff, nothing that behaved weirdly in wind. It just moved like hair moves. The two things I’d want warning about
I’ve said a lot of glowing things about this piece and they all stand. But there are two caveats and it would be dishonest to leave them out.
The clips were rough at first
When it first arrived the clips were genuinely stiff. Rough to open, rough to close.
With regular wear and repeated opening and closing they softened right up, and they’re now as comfortable as the clips on any of my other pieces. So it’s a temporary problem rather than a permanent one, but you should know it’s coming rather than thinking you’ve been sent a faulty piece.
I’ve no idea whether that’s every Wildflower piece or just mine. Worth saying that the same thing happened with my Uniwigs clips and they also settled, so it may just be what new clips do.
I use a texturising spray on the sections of my own hair where the clips grip anyway, which helps with both comfort and hold regardless of the piece.
European hair tangles more easily
This is the trade-off nobody mentions when they’re praising European hair, and I praised it plenty above.
Because the texture is so fine, it’s more prone to tangling when you’re out and about. Friction does it. Your collar, the shoulders of a coat, a scarf, that sort of thing.
It isn’t dramatic and this piece doesn’t tangle badly. It’s just something fine hair does, whether it’s on your head or on a topper.
The fix is a comb in every bag. I keep one in each of my handbags and dotted around the house. Mine’s a Belletress, much the same as the Jon Renau ones, and any brand does the job. I also like a travel Wet Brush, the sort that folds out and has a mirror in the handle.
And the technique matters as much as the comb: hold the hair above the tangle and work through it gently from below. Don’t drag a brush down from the top, because that’s how you pull hair out of the base.
A few more things worth knowing
It arrived already layered. That saved me a salon trip, which is not nothing, and it means the piece was wearable from day one rather than after an appointment and another fifty quid.
More importantly, it isn’t front-heavy. The hair doesn’t hang forward over my face. My Lusta does exactly that, and even after having it thinned it still does it enough that I want more taken out. This one arrived without that problem.
Inside the cap there are six pressure-sensitive clips, three each side, and a comb at the front. You can take the comb out and plenty of people do. I’ve kept mine in, partly because I might want to slide velcro under it at some point.
On density and coverage: mine is the medium, and it covers my parting and crown well, which is where my loss sits. If you’ve got significant loss at the back, Wildflower do higher density pieces and I’d point you at one of those instead. You can always have the front thinned out afterwards. It’s much harder to add hair that isn’t there.

Silk or Lace is a marketplace for toppers and wigs across a range of brands, and it has grown a lot since I first found it. It was started in 2019 by Suran Yoo, who began losing her hair at 23 and spent about five years hunting for something that worked before she came across hair toppers ahead of her engagement photos. She documented the whole thing on Instagram as @the_strandie, which is how plenty of us found her in the first place. Her site and that account were among the first things I came across when I was still trying to work out what a topper even was, over a year before I bought this piece.
These days they have an actual storefront in Plano, Texas, and they do both in-person and virtual consultations you can book online. They have also brought out their own collection, built around closed lace rather than silk top, on the reasoning that a two layer cap is thinner and lighter and needs less of your own hair to blend than a three layer silk one does. Fair enough in a Texas summer, and honestly in a British one too. They carry Highline, Lusta, Follea and others alongside their own pieces.
Worth knowing if you’re here in the UK: they ship from the US, so anything you buy from them now would carry import duty and VAT on top of the price.
Two things I’d actually point you to. The Lightly Worn side, where people consign the piece that didn’t work out for them, which is how a lot of us end up affording the expensive brands at all. And the hair finder, where you filter by colour, length and construction type and then set an alert for when something matching your criteria gets listed.
That last part matters more than it sounds. Pieces from the popular brands sell out in minutes, and an alert is the difference between getting one and finding out about it afterwards. It’s the same problem I ran into with Highline, where I had to sit refreshing the website with Instagram notifications switched on.

The Verdict
One of my favourite toppers I’ve ever owned. The Hazel with its silk top base, European hair and 21 inch length is a genuinely special piece – the parting looks real, the hair quality is excellent, the colour is accurate, and wearing it is the easy kind of experience that makes you forget hair loss is even something you’re managing that day. The fact that it’s made by someone who’s been through hair loss herself, who does everything with her own hands and genuinely cares about what she’s putting out into the world – that comes through in the piece. You can just tell.
