Right. So Stylevana sent me a bunch of stuff for June and before I start slapping things on my face willy-nilly, I thought – let me actually look at what’s in these. Because I’ve learned the hard way (many times, many flares, much sadness) that “PR skincare” and “safe for my face” are not the same sentence.
So this post is two things at once. First the full ingredients breakdown on each one, written before anything touched my face, with the bits I actually care about flagged up front. Then, at the bottom of each product, my actual verdict after using it – because paper and real life are very different and I said I’d come back and tell you. The YouTube video is embedded further down too.
Quick bit of housekeeping before the ingredients: code INF10NEVE gets you up to 25% off at Stylevana (full details on my Stylevana discount code page). Also, fair warning: this is not my first Stylevana rodeo. March, April, an earlier June, August. They keep sending me stuff and I keep saying yes. Apparently I never learn.
What I’m checking for
- FA safe / Malassezia safe – fatty acid esters and oils that can feed the yeast linked to fungal acne and seb derm
- Fragrance – any parfum or essential oils (bad news for rosacea and reactive skin)
- Rosacea friendly – fragrance-free, no essential oils, low irritation profile
- Seb derm safe – no fatty esters that Malassezia can feed on
If any of this is making you go “wait, what’s Malassezia” – go read up first, then come back. I’ve got full posts on treating facial seb derm, seb derm safe cleansers, Malassezia safe moisturisers, and the K-beauty products that actually helped my rosacea. I’ve got both conditions myself (type 1 rosacea plus seb derm, an absolute joy of a combination), which is exactly why I’m this pedantic about ingredient lists before anything touches my face. (Though I still end up putting it on my face because that’s what I do! Gotta test the stuff right?)
1. Ongredients Skin Barrier Calming Lotion
Full ingredients (INCI): Water, Glycerin, Propanediol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glyceryl Stearate, Phenyl Trimethicone, C14-22 Alcohols, Polysorbate 60, Arginine, Coptis Japonica Root Extract, Carbomer, Butylene Glycol, Corchorus Olitorius Leaf Extract, Daucus Carota (Carrot) Root Extract, Ilex Paraguariensis (Yerba Mate) Leaf Extract, Borago Officinalis Extract, C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside, Centella Asiatica Extract, Glucose, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tripeptide-1, Copper Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Hexapeptide-9, Hexapeptide-11, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-2, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5.
| FA / Malassezia safe | ❌ No |
| Fragrance | ✅ Fragrance-free |
| Rosacea friendly | ✅ Excellent (no fragrance, no essential oils) |
| Seb derm safe | ⚠️ Medium risk (fatty esters present) |
🌿 What it does on paper
- Strong barrier support – silicones + humectants + emollients working together to reduce transepidermal water loss
- Very low irritation profile – no fragrance, no essential oils, nothing that’s going to poke the bear
- Peptide complex – signals repair pathways over time (not overnight magic, long-game stuff)
- Centella + plant extracts – mild anti-inflammatory effect in the background
- Good buffer layer under makeup or actives
Real-world what this might actually mean: Skin feels less reactive, more “coated and calm” – especially when your barrier is irritated or just completely knackered from over-exfoliating or a flare.
First impressions on paper: Genuinely impressive peptide list. Like, a lot of peptides. Calm, fragrance-free, low irritation profile overall. The fatty esters are the only reason it doesn’t get a full green light for seb derm. I’m actually excited about this one.
My verdict after using it: My fave of the bunch. Not too thick and my skin seems to love this.
2. AXIS-Y TXA 2.5% Intensive Brightening Cream
Full ingredients (INCI): Water, Glycerin, Dicaprylyl Ether, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Stearyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid, Octyldodecanol, Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate, Behenyl Alcohol, Panthenol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Arachidyl Alcohol, Dipentaerythrityl Hexahydroxystearate/Hexastearate/Hexarosinate, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Citric Acid, Arachidyl Glucoside, Garcinia Cambogia Fruit Extract, Hydroxyacetophenone, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Ceramide NP, Carbomer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Glutathione, Butylene Glycol, Tocopherol, Centella Asiatica Extract, Houttuynia Cordata Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate.
| FA / Malassezia safe | ❌ No |
| Fragrance | ✅ Fragrance-free |
| Rosacea friendly | ✅ Very good |
| Seb derm safe | ❌ Not suitable long-term |
🌙 What it does on paper
- Tranexamic acid (2.5%) – helps reduce redness-linked pigmentation and uneven tone
- Niacinamide – oil regulation, barrier strengthening, tone smoothing (does a lot, this one)
- Panthenol + ceramide NP – barrier repair support
- Centella + heartleaf (Houttuynia Cordata) – calming inflammation pathways
- Multiple HA forms – sustained hydration layering rather than one hit and done
Real-world what this might actually mean: Skin looks less blotchy, more even-toned, and slightly “smoothed out” over time. Especially relevant for post-redness marks and that general uneven-ness that comes with reactive skin.
First impressions on paper: Tranexamic acid plus niacinamide is a solid brightening combo – genuinely one of the better approaches for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Shea butter puts it firmly in the “not for seb derm” column though. If hyperpigmentation is your main concern and seb derm isn’t in the picture, this looks decent on paper.
My verdict after using it: This is a little too thick for me and my combo skin.
3. Rejuran Dual Effect Ampoule
Full ingredients (INCI): Rubus Fruticosus Leaf Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Vaccinium Angustifolium Fruit Extract, Morus Nigra Fruit Extract, PEG-6, Glycerin, Water, Sodium Hyaluronate, Dipropylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Niacinamide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Carbomer, Squalane, Hydrolyzed DNA (PDRN), Xanthan Gum, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Caprylyl Glycol, Pentylene Glycol, Polysorbate 20, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hexylene Glycol, Ceramide NP, Adenosine, Oleic Acid, Trehalose, Urea, Tocopheryl Acetate, Arbutin, Cholesterol, Serine, Pullulan, Algin, Disodium Phosphate, Potassium Phosphate, Bisabolol.
| FA / Malassezia safe | ❌ No |
| Fragrance | ✅ Fragrance-free |
| Rosacea friendly | ✅ Good |
| Seb derm safe | ❌ Not ideal |
🧬 What it does on paper
- PDRN (that’s salmon DNA, yes really) – supports skin recovery signalling at a cellular level
- Licorice root extract – brightening + anti-inflammatory effect
- Ceramide + cholesterol + fatty acids – barrier lipid replenishment (the full trio)
- Aloe + bisabolol – soothing, redness calming
- Humectant-rich base – deep hydration without immediate heaviness
Real-world what this might actually mean: Skin looks more rested, less stressed, and slightly more resilient over time – especially after irritation or a dryness spell. Not an overnight thing. A slow burn.
First impressions on paper: PDRN is the signature Rejuran ingredient and the repair and soothing profile overall looks strong. The seb derm problem here is oleic acid, which is a long-chain fatty acid and exactly what Malassezia feeds on, plus polysorbate 20 and hydrogenated lecithin, both of which get flagged. To be clear about one thing, because I say it everywhere else on this site and I want to be consistent: the squalane is NOT the problem. Squalane is a hydrocarbon, not a fatty acid and not a fatty ester, so Malassezia can’t use it – it’s one of the few oils that screens clean. Honestly I’m kind of fascinated by this one regardless.
My verdict after using it: Not bad. Too soon to tell any difference.
4. BeginS Blue Hydrangea Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Full ingredients (INCI): Water, Propanediol, Glycerin, Methylpropanediol, Pentylene Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Butylene Glycol, Octyldodeceth-16, Arginine, Carbomer, 1,2-Hexanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Hydroxyacetophenone, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Gellan Gum, Adenosine, Agar, Sodium Hyaluronate, Disodium EDTA, Dioscorea Japonica Root Extract, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Glycosyl Trehalose, Fragrance (Parfum), Centella Asiatica Extract, Ficus Carica Fruit Extract, Lactobacillus Ferment, Ceramide NP, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Dimethylsilanol Hyaluronate, Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Panthenol, Sodium DNA, Hydrangea Macrophylla Leaf Extract.
| FA / Malassezia safe | ❌ No |
| Fragrance | ❌ Contains fragrance (Parfum listed) |
| Rosacea friendly | ⚠️ Moderate risk |
| Seb derm safe | ❌ Not suitable |
💧 What it does on paper
- Multi-weight hyaluronic acid system – surface and deeper hydration layering at the same time
- Panthenol + ceramide NP – barrier reinforcement
- Lactobacillus ferment – microbiome-friendly hydration support
- Adenosine – mild smoothing and skin conditioning effect
- Immediate plumping effect – visible hydration within minutes of application
Real-world what this might actually mean: Skin feels plumper, bouncier, and temporarily “dehydration-free” – especially right after cleansing when your face feels tight and sad.
First impressions on paper: Fragrance plus jojoba oil is just… a lot. The hydrangea extract and multiple forms of hyaluronic acid look genuinely nice on paper. But fragrance in a serum you’re layering close to skin is an automatic yellow flag for me, especially for anyone with rosacea or reactive skin. Will still try it. Carefully.
My verdict after using it: Not a fan of the fragrance but it did feel nice on the skin.
5. APRILSKIN Real Calendula Peel Off Mask
Full ingredients (INCI): Water, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Alcohol, Dipropylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Polyglyceryl-4 Laurate, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Peel Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, Juniperus Mexicana Oil, Salvia Sclarea Oil, Calendula Oil, Chamomilla Recutita Extract, Borago Officinalis Extract, Centaurea Cyanus Extract, Sodium Acetate, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA.
| FA / Malassezia safe | ⚠️ Mostly yes |
| Fragrance | ❌ Contains essential oils (multiple) |
| Rosacea friendly | ❌ Poor |
| Seb derm safe | ⚠️ Medium-low risk |
🌼 What it does on paper
- Instant surface smoothing – the peel-off film gives temporary skin refinement
- Calendula + chamomile extracts – mild soothing properties (largely undone by the essential oils, but they’re in there)
- Oil absorption feel – skin feels cleaner and more matte right after use
- Aromatherapeutic sensory experience – lavender and citrus if that’s your thing
Real-world what this might actually mean: A short-term “polished skin surface” effect – smoother feel for a few hours, not any kind of structural improvement. More of a treat than a treatment.
First impressions on paper: Orange peel oil, lavender, juniper, clary sage – all in one mask, plus calendula oil which is an actual plant oil rather than an extract. That is a lot of essential oils for one product. Like, pick a lane. The peel-off format also means mechanical irritation on top of the chemical irritation potential. I’m going in with low expectations on this one, genuinely.
My verdict after using it: Yeah my face turned red with this one! But smooth and red.
6. Atopalm Outdoor Sun Stick SPF50+ PA++++
Full ingredients (INCI): Octyldodecanol, Propylheptyl Caprylate, Butylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Polyamide-8, Titanium Dioxide, Dibutyl Lauroyl Glutamide, Silica Silylate, Vinyl Dimethicone, Aluminum Stearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Alumina, Patchouli Oil, Cedarwood Oil, Mugwort Oil, Peppermint Oil, Stearic Acid, Tocopherol, Allantoin, Water.
| FA / Malassezia safe | ❌ No |
| Fragrance | ❌ Contains essential oils (including peppermint) |
| Rosacea friendly | ❌ Very poor |
| Seb derm safe | ❌ Very poor |
☀️ What it does on paper
- High SPF50+ PA++++ protection – strong UV defense on paper
- Portable reapplication format – easy top-ups without the mess of a liquid
- Water-resistant feel – better durability for outdoor use
- Silicone + wax base – creates a physical protective film on skin
- Titanium dioxide – mineral UV coverage
Real-world what this might actually mean: Keeps UV exposure in check with fast on-the-go protection, especially useful for reapplying over makeup during the day. The format is genuinely convenient. The essential oil situation is… not.
First impressions on paper: Peppermint oil in a sunscreen. Peppermint oil. In something you put on your face and leave there all day. I don’t know what to tell you. Cedarwood, patchouli and mugwort as well, all in a product marketed as gentle outdoor sun protection. This one has me genuinely baffled on paper. We’ll see.
My verdict after using it: Wasn’t the biggest fan.
The big picture summary
Strip everything back and here’s what each one is actually for:
- 🧴 Ongredients – barrier comfort + calm baseline
- 🌙 AXIS-Y – tone correction + redness fading
- 🧬 Rejuran – repair + resilience support
- 💧 BeginS – hydration + plumping
- 🌼 APRILSKIN – temporary smoothing + sensory mask moment
- ☀️ Atopalm – UV protection + convenience
Ranking on paper (best to most problematic for reactive / seb derm / rosacea skin)
- Ongredients Skin Barrier Calming Lotion
- AXIS-Y TXA 2.5% Brightening Cream
- Rejuran Dual Effect Ampoule
- BeginS Blue Hydrangea Serum
- APRILSKIN Real Calendula Peel Off Mask
- Atopalm Outdoor Sun Stick
That ranking is the pre-testing one, worked out purely from ingredient lists. I’ve left it as it was rather than quietly rewriting it, because the whole point of this post was to see how well a paper read holds up. My verdict after actually using each one sits under every product above – and the short version is that the paper order held up better than I expected at both ends. Ongredients was my favourite. APRILSKIN turned my face red. Watch the video for the rest.
*All products were gifted by Stylevana. All opinions are my own and I will always tell you exactly what I think, including when something is a hard no for reactive skin.
FAQ
Is squalane safe for seb derm and fungal acne?
Yes. Squalane is a hydrocarbon, not a fatty acid and not a fatty ester, so Malassezia cannot metabolize it. It is one of the very few oils that screens clean on Malassezia checkers, which is why it turns up in products aimed at fungal acne prone skin. It gets confused with squalene and with plant oils generally, but it behaves completely differently.
Which ingredients in this haul are the actual seb derm problems?
Across these six products the recurring triggers are caprylic/capric triglyceride, cetyl ethylhexanoate, shea butter, jojoba oil, oleic acid, cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate, palmitic and stearic acid, and the polysorbates. Essential oils are a separate problem: they are an irritation risk for rosacea rather than Malassezia food.
Are essential oils in skincare a problem for rosacea?
Generally yes. Peppermint, lavender, clary sage, patchouli, cedarwood, mugwort and citrus peel oils are all common triggers for reactive skin, and citrus oils are also photosensitising. Two products in this haul lean heavily on them, which is why they score poorly for rosacea despite being reasonable on other measures.
Can a product be fragrance free and still bad for seb derm?
Yes, and it happens constantly. Fragrance free means no parfum or essential oils, which matters for rosacea and general irritation. Seb derm and fungal acne safety is a completely separate test about whether the formula contains fatty acids and esters that Malassezia can feed on. Three of the products here are fragrance free and still not seb derm safe.
