It started with a cleanser. I was trying to be good about my skin, doing all the right things, double cleansing like every beauty editor told me to, using a nice balm cleanser in the first step, feeling very sophisticated about it. And then my face just… didn’t get better. The flaky patches around my nose stayed. The redness stayed. The weird texture that wasn’t quite normal skin and wasn’t quite a rash but was definitely something stayed.
It took me embarrassingly long to join the dots. The balm cleanser was full of plant oils and fatty esters. I was cleansing my face every single evening with something Malassezia would happily eat for dinner. Twice. Because double cleansing. I was feeding the exact thing I was trying to get rid of, twice a night, like a very dedicated idiot. Oil cleansers are almost always a problem for seb derm – the plant oil bases are exactly what Malassezia feeds on. If you want to double cleanse safely, micellar water is the move, not oil.
Cleanser is arguably the most important category to get right if you have seb derm. It touches your entire face, twice a day, every day. If it’s feeding Malassezia, you’re doing that twice a day, every day. The damage compounds quietly and you won’t always be able to trace it back because you’ve been using the same cleanser for weeks. Start here. Get this right first. Everything else is secondary.
Before anything else: bookmark Sezia. Free tool, you paste in an ingredient list, it flags things associated with feeding Malassezia. Not perfect, not a clinical diagnosis, but a genuinely useful first pass. Use it on everything, including things on this list – formulas change and I can’t personally guarantee anything past the date I last checked. What you want: water-based, minimal fatty esters, fragrance-free or very low fragrance, pH-balanced. What you want to avoid: balm cleansers with plant oils, cleansing milks loaded with esters, and anything that feels like it’s leaving a film on your skin after rinsing. That film? That’s Malassezia food sitting on your face.
One thing I want to be straight about before the list: “fungal acne safe” and “gentle” are two different claims, and a product can pass one and fail the other. A few things below screen clean for Malassezia but still contain fragrance, sulfates or preservatives that some people react to. I’ve flagged those where they come up rather than quietly leaving them out, because you deserve to make that call yourself.
(You’ll see this spelled both ways, by the way. Seborrheic dermatitis and seborrhoeic dermatitis are the same condition, the first is the American spelling and the second is the British one. I say seb derm for short throughout because typing either of them out repeatedly is a punishment.)

The best face wash for seborrheic dermatitis, short version
If you want the answer without reading all 27 of them:
- Starting from scratch: Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Wash. It screens clean, there’s no fragrance in it, and it’s about £3 in every Boots and Superdrug.
- Mid-flare, when everything stings: Etude SoonJung pH 6.5 Whip Cleanser, or Avène Tolérance if you can’t face foam at all.
- First cleanse instead of an oil: Bioderma Sensibio H2O micellar water. The Garnier pink cap does the same job for about half the price.
All of those are easy to get in the UK and all of them pass for Malassezia, with one small flag on the Avène that I explain further down. The rest of the list is below, with full ingredients, plus a section near the end for the popular ones that come with a heads up.
Gel and foaming face washes for seborrheic dermatitis
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser
One of the most commonly recommended cleansers for reactive skin. Fragrance-free, no stripping surfactants, ceramide NP and niacinamide in there. One thing to flag: it contains Polysorbate 60 and Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate, both of which some Malassezia checkers flag. The wider community tolerates it well and it appears on the FA safe master lists with caveats, but if you’re particularly reactive, run the current INCI through Sezia before committing. No oils, no fatty esters, nothing on the Malassezia trigger list. The most accessible budget cleanser here – about £3 at Boots or Superdrug, on every high street in the country. It doesn’t have active ingredients doing exciting things, but it cleans your face and it doesn’t feed Malassezia.
It’s kind to sensitive skin as well. There’s no fragrance or soap in it, and the list is short, with panthenol and vitamin E doing the soothing. That’s why it’s my starting-from-scratch pick. One thing though: Simple has tweaked this formula over the years and it varies a bit by country, so check the back of the bottle you pick up.

K-beauty cleansers worth knowing about
K-beauty has produced some of the most genuinely seb derm-friendly cleansers on the market – minimal surfactant systems, pH-balanced formulas, clean ingredient lists. If you’re new to K-beauty for reactive skin, my post on Korean skincare for rosacea is a good starting point – a lot of the same principles apply to seb derm. Most of the cleansers below are available through Skinsider (code NEVEEN15), Olive Young (code NEVEEN20), or YesStyle (code NEVEEN15). Run each one through Sezia with the current INCI before buying – K-beauty formulas do occasionally change.
HARUHARU WONDER Black Rice Moisture 5.5 Soft Cleansing Gel
pH 5.5, coconut-derived surfactants, fermented black rice for hydration. SkinSort lists it as fungal acne safe. Fragrance-free, no oils, screens cleanly. SkinSort lists an older version as fungal acne safe. Centella-based (the base is centella leaf water rather than plain water) and a gentle foam. It does have a little chamomile oil in it, and some newer listings show fragrance at the end, so check your bottle if that matters to you.

Flare-state face washes
Sometimes your skin is so reactive that even a gentle foaming cleanser feels like an attack. These are the options for those phases. And honestly, this is where routine simplicity matters most – if you’re in a bad flare, stripping everything back to just a cleanser, antifungal treatment and a basic moisturiser is going to serve you better than any amount of active ingredients. Avène Tolérance Extremely Gentle Cleanser Lotion
Non-foaming, no-rinse, you apply it and wipe it off. Fifteen ingredients, no fragrance, designed for hypersensitive skin. One flag: it’s built on cetearyl alcohol, a fatty alcohol some Malassezia checkers (SkinSort included) flag, although there are no oils or fatty acid esters in it. Micellar water as a first cleanse
If you’re double cleansing – removing SPF or makeup before your actual cleanser – micellar water is usually safer than oil cleansers for Malassezia-prone skin. Most oil cleansers have plant oil bases that are a problem. Micellar water sidesteps that. And yes, you do still need to wear SPF even with seb derm – UV exposure is a known flare trigger, and azelaic acid (which is brilliant for seb derm) makes your skin more sun-sensitive. Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water
Folliculitis Scout and Skincarisma both pass it for fungal acne. Fragrance-free, 10 ingredients, removes light makeup and SPF without leaving residue. Also at Sephora UK. Available at Boots, Superdrug, and Lookfantastic (code LFTFNEVEEN). Follow with your regular cleanser.

Medicated face washes and antifungal options
Nizoral Shampoo as a face wash
Not technically a face product but absolutely used as one. A small amount of Nizoral 2% ketoconazole shampoo used as a facial cleanser two or three times a week, left on for a few minutes, then rinsed. It’s drying, so follow with a good Malassezia safe moisturiser. But it works. Worth knowing this option exists even if it’s not glamorous. Sebamed Clear Face Cleansing Foam
pH 5.5 and designed for blemish-prone skin, but it does contain fragrance. No oils or fatty esters, so it passes on the Malassezia side. Good if you want something that feels like a proper skincare product rather than a repurposed shampoo. Available at Boots.

Popular cleansers that come with a heads up
These are all well-loved cleansers, and they’re popular for a reason. Each one just has something on the ingredient list that some Malassezia checkers flag, so I’d patch test first and keep them for weeks when your skin’s behaving. And if one of these already works for you, keep using it.
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
A gentle, fragrance-free cleanser with ceramides and hyaluronic acid, and one of the most recommended on the high street. The catch is a few emulsifiers in the middle of the list (PEG-40 stearate, glyceryl stearate and polysorbate 20) that Malassezia checkers tend to pick up. Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil
An oil cleanser on a seb derm list, after I spent three paragraphs at the top telling you oil cleansers were my whole problem. So let me be precise about why it’s here and who it’s for.
It’s here because it’s one of the most popular oil cleansers around, and the heartleaf has genuine anti-inflammatory properties. It is still an oil cleanser though, so there are esters and plant oils in it, plus fragrance. If you’re flaring, stick with micellar water as your first cleanse. If your skin is stable and you want an oil cleanse for heavy SPF or makeup, this is the one I’d try first, and I’d rinse thoroughly and follow with a proper second cleanse. Can you double cleanse if you have seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Yes, just swap the oil cleanser for micellar water as your first step. Bioderma Sensibio H2O or the Garnier pink cap both screen clean and won’t feed Malassezia the way most oil cleansers will.
Are K-beauty cleansers good for seb derm?
Genuinely some of the best options out there. Etude SoonJung and iUNIK Centella Bubble Foam are both on SkinSort’s fungal acne safe list (the iUNIK in an older version). K-beauty tends to do minimal, pH-balanced surfactant systems really well.
What cleanser should I use during a seb derm flare?
Strip it right back. Avène Tolérance is a non-foaming wipe-off option for when even a gentle foam feels like too much, or Etude SoonJung if you can tolerate a normal cleanse. Less is more when your skin’s actively angry.
Does the choice of cleanser really affect seborrhoeic dermatitis?
It matters more than almost anything else on your shelf. You’re applying it to your entire face twice a day, every day. If it’s feeding Malassezia, you’re doing that damage twice daily without realising. I learned this one the hard way.
Does fungal acne safe mean a cleanser is fragrance free?
No, and this trips people up constantly. Fungal acne safe only means the formula contains nothing that feeds Malassezia. A cleanser can pass that test and still contain parfum, sulfates or preservatives like methylisothiazolinone that irritate sensitive skin for completely different reasons. If fragrance is one of your triggers, check the ingredient list for it separately rather than assuming an FA safe rating covers it.
What is the best face wash for seborrheic dermatitis?
Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Wash is the one I’d hand most people first. It screens clean, there’s no fragrance in it, it’s about £3, and you can buy it in any Boots or Superdrug. If your skin is actively flaring, Etude SoonJung is gentler. There isn’t one best face wash that suits everybody, which is exactly why there are 27 on this list instead of one.
Can you use a normal face wash if you have seborrheic dermatitis?
Often, yes. What decides it is the ingredient list, not whether the bottle is marketed at seb derm. Plenty of ordinary high street face washes screen clean, and the £3 Simple one further up this page is proof of that. What you’re avoiding is plant oils and fatty esters, which is what most balm and oil cleansers are built on.
