This isn’t my usual kind of post. No product links, no before and afters. Just something I need to put out there because I genuinely wish someone had told me sooner.
I used topical minoxidil for a while. And the whole time, Mr. Pickles, my Yorkie, was just living his adorable little wild pup doggy life around me. Sleeping near me. Doing what dogs do. I wasn’t thinking twice about it because why would I. Nobody mentioned anything.
Here’s what nobody mentioned.
Minoxidil is toxic to pets. Not in some vague theoretical way. In a documented, this-can-cause-heart-failure way. Dogs and cats both. And the exposure threshold isn’t high. Residue on your hands after applying. Residue building up on your pillowcase. A dog being a dog and licking your hand without you noticing. That’s enough.
The part that got me when I eventually found this out was where I found it. Posted somewhere on Reddit. Not in any of the content I’d consumed before starting. Not flagged anywhere obvious. Just sitting in the fine print that nobody actually reads.
So here’s the practical bit.
Wash your hands right after applying, every single time. Let it fully dry before your pet is near you, four hours minimum for topical. Store the bottle somewhere they genuinely can’t access. And if you’re using it overnight, your pillowcase is collecting residue, wash it regularly, like actually regularly.
If your pet ever seems off, wobbly, lethargic, breathing strangely, and there’s any chance of exposure, that’s an emergency vet situation. Not a “let me search this” situation. Go.
I’m not saying quit minoxidil. That’s between you and whoever’s managing your treatment. I’m just saying this information should be a lot easier to find than it currently is, and since I have a corner of the internet, here it is.
Share it with someone who’s on minoxidil and has a pet. Takes two seconds.
