MONPURE LONDON: Scalp saviours? Initial Thoughts [Review]

Set for a healthy scalp

It’s no big secret that I have a love affair with all things scalp care, I love to try anything and everything that promises to care for the delicate skin on my head, so when I was given the chance to try these products out I dove head first (or scalp first) right into a few of them.

As I’ve mentioned before in other posts and videos, I have had a finicky scalp since my teenage years, sebborheic dermatitis, dry sensitive peeling patches of skin, irritation and redness are a few on the long list of scalp issues I have to contend with on a daily basis.

Monpure is a cruelty free, luxury hair care and scalp care brand here in the UK that promises to soothe and care for your scalp. Monpure believe that your scalp is an unsung hero and that caring for it is just as important as your skin care routine, which I totally agree with!

The box arrived in lovely packaging, I was pleasantly surprised by all the products included in the set. Honestly my scalp has only gotten worse since the lockdowns began, whether it’s due to stress or hormones, I’m not quite sure, but one thing I’m certain of is that this box of goodies came at the perfect time.

Contained within my box:

I didn’t want to try everything all at once and overload my scalp with product so I opted to try three of the products to start with (look out for my future post about the others). I’ve been using these products for a little over a week and wanted to share my initial impressions and thoughts on them.

Clarifying Scalp Scrub

One of the first products I tried from the kit is a gentle and creamy scalp scrub (always use scalp scrubs as gently as possible as to not cause abrasions on your scalp). I use a small walnut size amount on damp hair as a pre-shampoo treatment, and gently massage it into my scalp. It’s creamy in texture, with a lovely scent for an added air of relaxation to my routine. The product washes out pretty easily and left my scalp feeling refreshed and clean and did a great job at buffing away the dry flakes that like to cling on for dear life to my noggin’.

Key Ingredients taken from their website:

  • Argan Oil – This popular haircare ingredient is produced from Argan trees in Morocco and is packed with essential fatty acids and vitamin E to boost elasticity and shine. What makes it particularly great for hair is that it’s lighter than other plant-based oils, so doesn’t leave it feeling greasy or heavy.
  • Jojoba Beads – Jojoba is a North American plant (pronounced “hohoba”) from which a liquid wax can be extracted and turned into beads that can be used to gently buff away dead skin cells and product build-up on the scalp.
  • Shea Butter – A nut extract from the African shea tree, this is a particularly popular ingredient in skincare, as it is swiftly absorbed without leaving any greasy residue. It’s also renowned for its healing properties making it perfect for alleviating scalp discomfort.
  • Stearic Acid – This plant extract is a particularly popular ingredient in cleansers, as it’s known for its ability to bind oil and water molecules, lifting away excess grease and dirt.

Strengthening Silk Protein Shampoo

Silky smooth and clean, this shampoo doesn’t foam up very much but definitely cleanses my hair and scalp without leaving it feeling dry and crunchy. You only need to work a small amount of product into your roots to get that feeling of a cleansed scalp without the worry of stripping it of any moisture. Rather than using silicones, this shampoo uses vegan silk peptides that protect your hair from pollution and irritants. It’s also free from parabens and sulphates which is another bonus.

Key Ingredients taken from their website:

  • Aloe Vera – You might already be familiar with this ingredient as a popular after-sun or sunburn remedy. It’s a succulent plant that grows in arid landscapes around the world and is full of what’s known as polysaccharides which are famous for their hydrating and anti-inflammatory powers (so it’s a hero for issues like irritation, itching and dryness).
  • Keratin – This is a protein naturally found in the hair, otherwise known as the building blocks of the hair strand (basically the more protein it has, the stronger it will be). Ideal for boosting shine, fortifying fine hair and rebuilding damaged follicles, it also helps protect hair from future breakages.
  • Silk Peptides – Silkgel is a pioneering new vegan alternative to regular silk peptides, providing a “second skin” effect to the scalp and hair follicles. Produced via a process of fermenting plant starch, it’s been clinically proven to not only repair fragile or damaged hair strands, but also protect the hair and scalp from harmful pollutants as well as bacterial adhesion.

Aqua, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Lauryl Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside, Coco-Glucoside, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Polysorbate 80, Sodium Lactate, Polyquaternium-7, Propylene Glycol, Cetrimonium Chloride, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Panthenol (Pro Vitamin B5), Xanthan Gum, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, SR-Spider Polypeptide-1 (Vegan Silk Peptides), Sodium Benzoate, Vinegar (Apple Cider), Tetrasodium EDTA, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Linalool, Limonene.

Strengthening Essence Conditioner

This conditioner took me by surprise since the instructions say to apply to both scalp and hair, which was definitely different for me since I only ever applied conditioner from mid-lengths to the ends of my hair and avoiding my scalp at all costs. Not going to lie, I was a bit hesitant to apply this to my scalp. I thought I’d end up a greaseball mess within an hour or two of my hair being dry.

But surprisingly? I wasn’t! The image I had of myself with greasy thin limp locks didn’t happen, instead I had soft bouncy hair that felt moisturised and looked great (the hair I have left at least).

My hair and scalp feel amazing but only time will tell if these products will help with strengthening my hair and help improve the health of my scalp, but so far so good.

I’ll keep you posted with updates on these three products as I continue to use them regularly.

  • Coconut Oil – Packed with essential vitamins and fatty acids as well as delivering a good glug of moisture, coconut is like a nourishing espresso shot for your scalp, stimulating hair growth and helping to repair broken strands.
  • Pro Vitamin B5 – Otherwise known as ‘pantothenic acid’, this is great if your scalp is dry and flaky, as it works like a sponge – rapidly absorbing moisture and locking it in. It’s also used to treat wounds and irritation, encouraging skin cell regeneration so your scalp is left fortified and soothed.

I suffer from a dry scalp and found Head & Shoulders to be far too stripping. My go to now is an Elvive one that I only seem to be able to order online and I’m praying they don’t discontinue it. But if they do, then I might have to try Monpure – I’m so intrigued by a scalp scrub though, I’ve never tried one of those!

I always found the head & shoulders to be pretty drying and stripping on my hair and scalp too! I’ve never tried the Elvive products, I’ll have to see if I can get a hold of any here to give it a try! If you do decide to give Monpure a try I’m sure you’ll love it and the scrub especially, i love scalp scrubs. ?

This was such a helpful article! I am experiencing some issues with my own scalp care so I guess these deep nourishing products will rescue me from the hair mess

Glad you enjoyed it! I’m really big on taking care of my scalp (not just because I have alopecia) but I figure it’s the same as skincare for your face, your scalp is skin too and needs as much care and attention as any other part of your body.

I NEED this – I have the flakes at the top/back of my head!!

    • December 1, 2020 / 1:56 pm

They’ve been working really well on my flakes and patchy dry areas on my scalp! I think with it being winter my scalp just needs a bit more assistance to keep the flakes and dryness at bay.

I’ve not heard of this brand but it looks so lovely! Love the idea of a scalp scrub, I’ve never tried one before!

Wow this is a brilliant review 🙂 thank you for sharing, I usually focus on my skincare instead of haircare, but I think maybe I need to improve my haircare routine, so thank you for this!

Thank you so much for reading ? I was the same way for years where I only focused on skincare, up until I started to lose my hair and developed scalp issues.
