Best Cream for Rosacea UK: What to Buy in Boots and Superdrug

Best Cream for Rosacea UK: What to Buy in Boots and Superdrug

Rosacea shopping is miserable. You stand in an aisle holding two white tubes that both say “for sensitive skin” and neither of them tells you the thing you want to know, which is whether it’s going to make your face hot and tight by teatime.

I’ve got rosacea, so I’ve done a lot of standing in that aisle. This is the high street version of what to look for, built around things you can pick up in Boots or Superdrug without ordering from Korea and waiting a fortnight.

A note before anything else. Everything here is over the counter. Metronidazole, ivermectin, Soolantra, Rozex, oral antibiotics: all of that is a GP or a dermatologist conversation and none of my business. If your rosacea is papulopustular, the kind with the bumps and pustules rather than just flushing, creams off a shelf are not the answer and you should go and get it looked at.

At a glance

  • Best treatment for redness: azelaic acid at 10%, introduced slowly.
  • SPF: not optional. UV is one of the most reported triggers.
  • Where: Boots for the French pharmacy brands, Superdrug for CeraVe and The Ordinary.
  • What to avoid: fragrance, essential oils, alcohol denat, menthol, witch hazel, scrubs.

What actually calms it

The ingredient list matters more than the brand on the front, and there are about six things worth looking for.

Niacinamide supports the barrier and is one of the few actives most rosacea skin tolerates. Azelaic acid targets redness and bumps and is available over the counter at 10%, which is lower than the prescription strength but does something. Ceramides rebuild what’s been stripped. Centella and heartleaf calm. Thermal spring water is the base of both the French pharmacy ranges here and it’s genuinely soothing rather than marketing. Panthenol does the quiet background work.

What to avoid is a shorter list and mostly obvious once you’ve been burned. Fragrance, essential oils, alcohol denat high up the list, menthol, witch hazel, physical scrubs. Anything that tingles is telling you something.

Best cream for rosacea UK: the moisturisers

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Soothing Cream 40ml
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Soothing Cream 40ml

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Cream is the one I’d point most people at first. Neurosensine and thermal water, no fragrance, no preservative in the sterile pump version. It’s thick without being greasy and it’s aimed squarely at skin that reacts to everything.

Avene Tolerance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream does a similar job from the other big French pharmacy range. Very short ingredient list, sterile packaging, designed for skin that has run out of patience.

CeraVe Moisturising Lotion is the cheap workhorse. Three ceramides and hyaluronic acid, fragrance free, and it’s in every Boots and Superdrug in the country for under a tenner. It isn’t aimed at rosacea specifically, it’s a solid barrier moisturiser and nothing more, which for a lot of flushing-type rosacea is most of the job.

Want something lighter than the Toleriane? Bioderma Sensibio Defensive is a gel-cream rather than a cream, so it sits better under makeup and better in summer.

Best cleanser for rosacea

If your face squeaks after washing, that squeak is your barrier, gone. So: nothing foaming.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser 473ml
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser 473ml

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser is a creamy one that doesn’t do that, and its a wipe-off milk as well as a wash, so it takes make-up off in the same step. CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser is the budget pick again, non-foaming, ceramides in it, and it does not strip.

Then there’s Bioderma Sensibio H2O, the micellar water half the country already owns. Fine as a first step, or on a day when your face cannot tolerate being washed at all. Those days happen.

Best serum for rosacea UK and the redness treatments

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% is the obvious starting point, partly because it’s about seven quid and partly because azelaic acid is one of the very few actives with real evidence behind it for rosacea. The texture is odd, a bit silicone-slippy, and some people can’t get on with it under makeup. Introduce it slowly, two or three nights a week, and stop if it stings beyond the first few minutes.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Rosaliac AR Concentrate is their redness serum, ambophenol and neurosensine, built for visible redness and broken capillaries. It’s a slow one. Nothing targeting redness works in a week.

Bioderma Sensibio Defensive Serum is the gentlest of the three and the one I’d start with if acids have gone badly for you before. There’s no exfoliating step in it. It soothes and supports the barrier, and that’s the whole job, which leaves very little in it to react to.

Don’t stack all three. Pick one, give it eight weeks.

Also on Amazon: The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10%

If you want the same active from a different direction, I’ve compared two azelaic acid serums side by side, and written up the Anua one on its own after a few months of using it.

SPF, which is not optional

UV is one of the most consistently reported rosacea triggers, so this is less of a nice-to-have than it is with other skin concerns.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ 50ml
La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ 50ml

La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid is the one most reactive-skin people land on. No white cast worth mentioning, no fragrance in the sensitive version.

Avene Mineral Fluid SPF 50+ is the mineral option if chemical filters set you off. Zinc and titanium only, and mineral filters sit on top of the skin rather than absorbing into it, which some rosacea skin prefers.

If you want the full rundown of sunscreens with the labels actually read, I’ve done that separately.

Boots or Superdrug?

Mostly it comes down to which loyalty scheme you’re already in.

Boots carries the widest range of the French pharmacy brands. La Roche-Posay, Avene and Bioderma are all there, and Boots runs regular offers on the full-size LRP products. Advantage Card points stack up faster than people expect on skincare.

Superdrug is stronger on CeraVe and The Ordinary and tends to be a bit cheaper on both. Health and Beautycard points are less generous but the base prices are often lower.

Online, Escentual runs regular percentage-off events on the French pharmacy brands that beat both of them. La Roche-Posay’s own site is worth checking for the full Toleriane and Rosaliac ranges, and LOOKFANTASTIC and Cloud10 Beauty both carry CeraVe and La Roche-Posay.

Sephora UK is the other one worth knowing about, because if you’re already collecting their points you may as well collect them on the boring stuff. They carry CeraVe and The Ordinary, plus La Roche-Posay.

A routine that doesn’t overdo it

Morning: cream cleanser or just water, moisturiser, SPF. That’s it.

Night: cream cleanser, your one redness treatment if you’re using one, moisturiser.

The temptation with rosacea is to keep adding things because it isn’t fixed yet. Four products that your skin tolerates will do more than nine that it’s arguing with.

Questions people ask

Is there an over the counter cream that gets rid of rosacea?

No, and anything promising that is overselling. Rosacea is managed, not cured. What a good cream does is reduce redness, calm flushing and keep the barrier intact so you flare less often.

What do dermatologists recommend for a rosacea routine?

Broadly: gentle non-foaming cleanser, barrier moisturiser, daily SPF, and one targeted active like azelaic acid introduced slowly. Prescription treatment sits on top of that, it doesn’t replace it.

Does Boots sell anything for rosacea?

Yes. The La Roche-Posay Toleriane Rosaliac line is the one aimed at redness specifically, and Bioderma’s Sensibio range sits alongside it. Then there are the broader sensitive-skin ranges from Avene, CeraVe and La Roche-Posay, which is where most people should start.

Can I use retinol with rosacea?

Carefully and usually not at full strength. Retinoids can help texture and are sometimes prescribed, but they can also flare rosacea badly if you go in hard. That’s a conversation for whoever prescribes for you. I’m on prescription tretinoin myself and have written about how I buffer it for rosacea.

What about Korean skincare for rosacea?

A lot of it is excellent for this, centella and heartleaf especially. I’ve written up ten Korean products that helped my rosacea separately.
