Going by the research, the best ingredients for hyperpigmentation and dark spots are prescription tretinoin and azelaic acid, and none of it sticks without a sunscreen you wear every day. Tranexamic acid, niacinamide, Thiamidol, cysteamine and vitamin C come next. I’ve graded each one below by how much proof it has, and there’s a checker further down where you can paste any ingredient list and see what’s in it.
Which ingredients actually fade dark spots?
I graded these the same way as the anti-ageing tab on my skin ingredient checker. Strong evidence means several controlled trials on real people, and some evidence means at least one. Anything marked early has small studies behind it, or no comparison cream, or was paid for by the company that sells it (there’s a lot of that in brightening).
Dark spots covers a few different things. Melasma is the patchy, hormonal kind, usually on the cheeks and upper lip, while the marks left after spots and the flat brown sun spots that build up with age are a bit easier to fade. Most of the trials below were on melasma, because it’s the hardest to shift.
Strong evidence
Tretinoin is prescription only in the UK. Three controlled trials from the University of Michigan found 0.1% tretinoin faded melasma and the dark marks left after breakouts, including in Black patients. It’s slow, though – in one trial the difference only showed after 24 weeks, and most people got some redness and peeling.
Azelaic acid at 20% did as well as 4% hydroquinone in a trial of 329 women, and beat 2% hydroquinone in another with 155 patients. Prescription creams come in at 15 to 20%. Lots of serums have less in them, and those lower amounts haven’t been tested the same way.
Sunscreen is the boring one that matters most. In a study of 200 pregnant women who wore SPF 50+ every day, only 2.7% got melasma, against around half in an earlier group at the same clinic. Every fading ingredient on this page was tested alongside daily sunscreen too, so skipping it undoes the rest.
Some evidence
Tranexamic acid lowered melasma scores across 22 trials and 1,280 people in a 2024 review. Tablets from a doctor worked best, then injections. Creams and serums still helped, just less.
Niacinamide stops pigment moving up into the top layer of skin. At 5% it faded spots more than a plain moisturiser in 4 weeks, and 4% came close to 4% hydroquinone in a small split-face trial with fewer side effects.
Thiamidol (the Eucerin one) matched 4% hydroquinone in a 50-woman trial and beat a dummy cream over 24 weeks. Most of its research comes from Beiersdorf, who make it, so keep that in mind.
Cysteamine faded melasma in two placebo-controlled trials, used once a night for 4 months. It’s usually a cream you wash off after a short time.
Vitamin C (pure ascorbic acid) at 5% faded melasma a little less than hydroquinone by eye in a 16-woman trial, but the colour readings came out the same and it caused far fewer side effects.
Iron oxides are the pigments in tinted sunscreen. They block visible light as well as UV, and in a 68-person trial a tinted SPF helped melasma fade more than a plain one.
Butylresorcinol (4-n-butylresorcinol) faded melasma more than a dummy cream in two small double-blind trials from Seoul, at just 0.1% over 8 weeks. You’ll spot it in a lot of Korean brightening products.
Tazarotene is a prescription retinoid. In a 74-person trial, 0.1% cream faded post-acne dark marks in darker skin more than a dummy cream.
Melasyl (mercaptonicotinoyl glycine) is the newer La Roche-Posay ingredient. A 0.5% serum did as well as 4% hydroquinone for melasma in a 109-woman trial, with fewer skin reactions, though the brand paid for the study.
Silymarin comes from milk thistle. A 1.4% cream came close to 2% hydroquinone in a double-blind split-face trial, and it caused fewer side effects.
Early or small studies
These have something behind them, but not much yet: kojic acid, alpha-arbutin, liquorice extract, mulberry extract, undecylenoyl phenylalanine (Sepiwhite), soy extract, glutathione, hexylresorcinol, retinol, bakuchiol, adapalene, ellagic acid, aloesin, dioic acid, EGF, hydroxyphenoxy propionic acid and the gentler vitamin C and tranexamic acid derivatives. Add to that deoxyarbutin, decapeptide-12, diacetyl boldine, oligopeptide-68, lignin peroxidase, N-acetyl glucosamine, galactomyces, centella, ginseng, amla, Rumex (Tyrostat), olive extract, spirulina, Cordyceps, Platycodon, pine bark and the prescription retinoid trifarotene. Then there are the acids: glycolic, lactic, salicylic, mandelic and phytic. Their trials were strong peels done in a clinic, not the toners you buy. They’re in loads of K-beauty brightening serums. I wouldn’t rule them out, I’d just not expect them to do the heavy lifting on their own.
Lab or animal studies only
Lots of K-beauty and Asian beauty favourites sit here: rice, heartleaf, mugwort, green tea, resveratrol, ferulic acid, turmeric, pearl, paper mulberry, Scutellaria, Jeju tangerine peel, lotus, Saxifraga, PDRN, peony, Sophora, pomegranate, yuzu, tremella, reishi, sea buckthorn, moringa, Ecklonia cava, fucoxanthin, silk, hinokitiol, prickly pear, bearberry, linoleic acid, Poria cocos, mangosteen, ginger, Dendrobium, noni, Lithospermum, Japanese plum, goji, saffron, wakame, Coptis, bilberry, Ascophyllum, chlorogenic acid, purslane, honeysuckle, guava leaf, Phellodendron, ectoin, tomato, burdock and snow lotus. They lowered melanin in cells or animals, which is a start, but nobody has tested them on dark spots in people yet. The checker marks these grey so you know they’re there without thinking they’re proven.
What to avoid
Hydroquinone in anything off the shelf. It works, which is why every trial above measures against it, but in the UK and EU it’s banned in cosmetics and only allowed on prescription. The same goes for steroids and mercury, which still turn up in illegal lightening creams sold online and in some shops. Mercury in particular can damage your kidneys.
Bergamot oil is a sneaky one – it can leave brown streaks where it touched your skin once the sun hits it, so I’d keep it out of anything you leave on during the day. Cold-pressed lime, lemon, grapefruit and bitter orange peel oils can do the same.
Monobenzone and mequinol are permanent bleaching drugs doctors use for severe vitiligo. They can leave white patches for good, so they should never turn up in a dark spot product.
One last thing, and it’s important. A new dark spot, or one that’s changing shape or colour, needs a GP to look at it before you try fading it.

How the checker grades
What each colour means
Green is strong evidence: more than one good controlled trial on people. Blue is some evidence: at least one controlled trial. Amber with a question mark is early: small studies, studies with no comparison cream, or ones paid for by the brand. Amber with an exclamation mark is something that can cause dark marks in the sun. Red is a banned or prescription-only ingredient that shouldn’t be in a cosmetic. Grey means it’s only been tested in lab cells or animals so far.
Anything left uncoloured is fine to use, the checker just hasn’t got dark spot research on it.
Why it reads the label, not the amount
Ingredient lists don’t show percentages, so the checker can only tell you an ingredient is there. A serum with a tiny splash of tranexamic acid gets the same grade as one with loads. Ingredients are listed from most to least, so the nearer the top, the better.
It also checks the list against my skin checker in one tap. Hit the link under your results to see the same list for fungal acne, rosacea or pore clogging without pasting it again.
Stacking a few of these? Vitamin C, retinoids and acids don’t always love being used at the same time, so my skincare routine checker will tell you what’s fine together and what’s better split between morning and night.
Dark spot ingredient questions
What is the best ingredient for dark spots?
Going by the trials, prescription tretinoin and azelaic acid have the most proof, and daily sunscreen matters more than anything. Over the counter, tranexamic acid, niacinamide, Thiamidol and vitamin C all have at least one controlled trial behind them.
Is niacinamide or vitamin C better for dark spots?
They both have some evidence and they work in different ways, so you don’t have to pick. Niacinamide stops pigment moving up through the skin, and vitamin C slows it being made. Both came close to 4% hydroquinone in small trials.
Is tranexamic acid good for hyperpigmentation?
Yes, for melasma especially. A 2024 review of 22 trials found it lowered melasma scores. Tablets from a doctor worked best, and creams and serums helped less but still helped.
Is hydroquinone legal in the UK?
Only on prescription. It’s banned in cosmetics in the UK and EU, so a cream with hydroquinone in it that you can buy off a shelf or online shouldn’t be on sale here.
How long do dark spot ingredients take to work?
Most of the trials ran for 8 to 24 weeks, so give anything at least two to three months. Tretinoin was the slowest, with one trial only seeing a clear difference after 24 weeks.
